“All of this will end in tears / The future is a lie / Believe it for a few more years / And then you die”: here in My Lament, we strongly believe in the health benefits of a daily dose of undiluted pessimism.
The mayfly’s short lifespan earned it the name “Eintagsfliege” in German, which translates literally to “one- day fly”. Friedrich Nietzsche used it to evoke the futility of human life in a letter to a friend: “By the time we find freedom, we are already exhausted, like a mayfly in the evening.” This image inspired the chorus of “Dying of the Light”. All together now: “I’m tired like a mayfly at midnight”.
lyrics
All my dreams are memories
All the stars are dead
They’ve been dead for centuries
We just haven’t noticed yet
All of this will end in tears
The future is a lie
Believe it for a few more years
And then you die
Staring into black
Eternity never meant to last
Forever looking back
To navigate by the ghosts of the past
The dead and dying
Still shining bright
Darkness closing in on us
At the speed of light
When I was young
I used to relish the fight
I’m tired like a mayfly at midnight
Rage against the dying of the light
I’m tired like a mayfly at midnight
I promised you the world
I promised you a future with me
But I don’t know if you’ve heard
The future’s not what it used to be
Dead or dying
Still shining bright
Darkness closing in on us
At the speed of light
When I was young
I used to relish the fight
I’m tired like a mayfly at midnight
Rage against the dying of the light
I’m tired like a mayfly at midnight
