Rhapsodic and associative, “Oh, Fall” could be about many things: the all- too-human farce of grand pretensions and ambitions? The tedium of the eternal return of the same? In the decade since these lyrics were originally written, “Winter is coming” has become a rather trite catchphrase: an apt comment, perhaps, on the seasonal ennui of renewal and disillusion.
lyrics
Turn of the season
Birth of the new
Death of the old
Contemptible you
Hailstones and keepsakes
Shivers and storms
Melancholy
Takes a familiar and tangible form
Oh, fall
Will we remember the fall
Memories of treason
Nurtured like wounds
Farcical longings
Weltschmerz in June
Take what I owe you
Wipe clean the slate
Harvest the land
Winnow the hurt and the grief
And the hate
Oh, fall
Will we remember the fall
The fall of leaves of man of dreams
Of best laid plans
Of dead-end schemes
From grace from hope
From all that gleams
To ruin
Auburn colours pensive stares
All pretty but it ends in tears
Days you’ll spend the rest of the year
Rueing
Turn of the season
Out with the new
In with the cold
The trite and the true
Clarity’s reason
The black and the white
Winter is coming
Welcome the crystalline dying of light
Oh, fall
Will we remember the fall
Let’s fall like snowflakes you and me
To ruin to pieces to our knees
Like leaves to rot
And feed these trees again
The reaper’s bringing in the sheaves
We come rejoicing, go like thieves
The end of days
The fall of leaves
And men
